Hi Autman
the boy's grave appears to have a coat of arms or knight on it. I do not see it anywhere on the 3 web sites Tkay gave us, and I do think it is a bit unusual for a little boy's grave. very interesting.
what images were on the governors grave? almost looks like shells.
Hi Jane
These Graves are from historical Annapolis Md.
This is were they brought the slaves to.
Alex Haley wrote roots here are some pics of his memorial bronze statues.
This is the picture untouched so you can see the marking better on the governors tomb.
Those are sea shells.
I took the governor's detail, crop and zoom to see what is there. I used the sites Tkay gave us to get an explanation of each item.
there is a small raised hand by itself in a shield. according to one of the websites, the raised hand symbolizes voice and song - The right hand is the life-force or hand of power. - [wonder if it is the 2nd one since he was the governor.]
Shell - The use of shell in burials is pre-Christian in practice and pre-dates even Egyptian burial practices. Shell is symbolic of fertility, resurrection and pilgrimage. Shells, coins and small stones are the traditional objects left at grave sites. There are several meanings given to this act. It may be a symbolic referral to the ancient custom of burying the dead under a cairn of rocks to protect the body from scavenging animals, or a reminder that the individual is not forgotten.
Wheat - resurrection, bread and wine (Christian), fertility
Bushel of wheat - body of Christ
Sheaves of wheat - The divine harvest, Often represents the aged.
Wheat Strands or Sheaves - The divine harvest.
I do not see anything specific about an arm raised holding wheat but I am sure it is the same or similar to the wheat alone.
