Are there too many paranormal shows? It seems there is another paranormal show that will air as a two night event. I am just curious what others feel about the existence and what seems to be a fad of these programs. Steve and Tango with their new show http://www.syfy.com/gha/index.php and Extreme Paranormal will air soon.http://www.aetv.com/extreme-paranormal/
I really don't think so. I look at it like this,if I miss seeing one, there will be another one on soon. There always entertaining and I just might learn something... ;)
If these programs stay on the serious side then I dont think there could be too many ...but once they turn out to be like SPOE ,,then its just a joke and although its "fun entertainment" in that sense.. the paranormal community of people- the real life active people that spend their spare time out investigating , trying to understand and capture evidence- shouldnt want shows that go that direction to be on the air constantly,,
Soon, there is going to be a movie coming out " American Ghost Hunter" by Chad Calek and Ryan Buel...
earlier this year, I did a pilot with them on this,,it looks to be very interesting..doubt that any of the pilot makes the big screen LOL but there is a trailor on AGH.com if you want to check it out,,( this isnt an ad for the movie,,lol I just wanted you to know about this,,a heads up if you didnt hear about it yet,,,,,,if you watch the trailor,,let me know what ya think!
Eventually the good shows will weed out the bad ones. It's all about ratings. I really think it's a refreshing start to finally sees some other paranormal shows instead of all the reruns...LOL
I agree with Polly...they need to stay on the serious side and stay focused on getting real evidence. I have been watching the new guys...Ghost Lab..I am somewhat impressed by them. They did Tombstone and got some real good evidence.
So lets just pull out the popcorn and finally have ourselves busy watching some paranormal shows.
I enjoy awatching almost all these shows, with the exception of the psychic kids one with Chip Coffee. (sp?)
As usual, you raise an interesting question, though, Tkay.
I do feel that the proliferation of these shows and other "pop-culture" paranormal & new-age resources have reached fad status. It reminds me of the spiritualist movements of the 19th century.
There is, I am sure, a hard core selection of people that take it seriously and pursue the topic in a serious manner. However, this easy accessability is bound to encourage "dabblers." people who think it sounds cool and exciting, fool around with it in a half hearted way, and then lose interest in couple years.
I see the same thing in living history & western martial arts orginizations. A movie like Braveheart comes out, and we are flooded with blue faced Scottsmen for a few months. Most are gone in a year, some stick around for 2-3 years and then depart. Very few make it a serious pursuit. Gladiator hit the theaters, and I was waist deep in romans for a while. Next it was Kingdom Of Heaven. We still have a lot of "fair weather crusaders" around from that one. :)
What does all this signify? Well I think thay are fun to watch, but these paranormal shows will do little to actually hurt or help the serious study of paranormal topics. People will get bored, lose interest, and the situation will even back out to a more natural level. I think it is entirely possible that in another 2-3 years, you will not see any weekly ghost hunting shows other than in syndicated reruns. Then again, Taps or one of the other better shows might stil be chugging along. It is difficult to say exactly.
Sometimes I feel these shows will cause more people to jump in that have no idea what they are doing. We have seen where people of died because of going where they should not because they wanted to investigate. It would be nice if one one of these shows would the dangers and teach some sort of etiquette.
I appreciate truth, accuracy, the time, effort & guts of all ‘real’ paranormal investigators. Weeding out or choosing not to watch the fake shows isn’t easy for some yet for the rest of the experienced public…. Just pure entertainment. Once again Polly ~ Congratulations! I was wondering if both you & Kat are members of this team? Thanks for the story & the link.
