Just jumping in and making a file is ok,,but there is more to it than is generally thought about.
Consider your surroundings, and what - if anything in the room, such as a clock, or dripping water ect,, listen before hand, to get a feel for the sounds of the things around you. An important thing is when recording, and you or someone makes a noise, such as coughing.. or a sniff, or a whisper- (which you should NEVER do when recording).. when you make a physical noise,, SAY; THAT WAS ME or THAT WAS A DOG,, or PEOPLE IN THE BG,, make sure you note outloud that it is something you are hearing,, so that on playback,,you might hear a whisper that is not noted" that was me",, and you could possibly have an evp.. see what I mean? And when you play back what you have recorded, please try to wear an over -the-ear headphone set. And use a good audio editing software,, I mostly use wav pad. then Audacity.
You can see over a good amount of time in recording, that you will notice little things that may be a heads up that an evp is going to occur or has occurred,, such as when you are talking, you may hesitate in speaking, and not realize it, or do realize it and cant avoid it. You may also stutter when talking,, I know this isnt proof of anything except what I have noticed through my 9 yrs of evp work. You will probably experience similar if not identical "little things" like this as you record more and more. I have recorded some evp that actually either - change your words-overlapping you to what they have to say,, - or even ,say what they want using a voice very similar to your own voice,,,,its odd, because you can hear your voice,,but you know you didnt say what it said... strange little things can happen with evp ,,it is way more than just turning on a recorder and asking a question to thin air. If you like EVP,, then study it well, pay attention to everything,, it is the most interesting area of Paranormal Research in my opinion. Good luck with all your EVP work. :)
