Apparition sighting... what does it mean?

I am not normally one who believed in ghosts or that type of thing but the past three years I have had three incidents where I could not explain what happened. I was not under the influence of any drug or alcohol, nor was I under any particular unusual stress. The one I am most curious about happened while I was on vacation in Idaho.

I was visiting at friend of mine and staying in her guest bedroom. About 3-4 a.m. (don't remember exactly).. I was asleep on her futon bed in her guest bedroom with the door shut. I am awakened as if someone had touched me.. I opened my eyes and straight in front of me about 3 feet is a little girl. As if she needed me is why she woke me. She was maybe 3-4 feet tall guessing 5-6 years old wearing a plaid dress and hair to about shoulders. She was a little white is the best way to describe. I rubbed my eyes thinking this must be a dream.. she is stil there. I sit up in bed. Look over at her. She is still there and moves the door.. and begins trying to open the door. At this point I am freaking out a little... jump up out of bed.. . I'm standing looking at her ... about 8 feet from me trying to open the door knob. I still see her. I realize she wants out of the room. I walk over.. (still seeing her the whole time).. and reach for the door knob to let her out. As I reach the door know I hit her "hands" and she dissolves... very bizzare!

I immediately went straight to my friends room and woke her up saying "you won't believe what just happened." Naturally she didn't believe me. However, I know what I saw. The question I would like to know is when I never saw any apparitions before do I all of a sudden see them? If I was dreaming as my psychiatrist brother thinks why didn't I dream up a hot girl or a demon or something else but a little girl in a plaid dress makes no sense!

I guess I am looking for answers... what does this possibly mean? I don't buy the notion that I was dreaming but am not sure what to think. Needless to say I was at this friend the next three nights but I slept with the door OPEN.

Anyone have any thoughts what this could have been?

I saw something similar about a year ago at my Lady Friend's house. I was sleeping on a bunk bed in her guest bedroom and woke up suddenly (an ocasional wake up is normal for me overnight) I checked the time to see if it was morning yet--1 20 AM, and lay back down. Suddenly, I thought I saw what looked like a slightly built man standing in the shadows on the other side of the room. Hey! I mumbled, thinking perhaps Linda's brother had stepped into the room for a moment. The guy stepped forward --it wasnt him! HEY! I yelled, my hair standing on end, NOW I was scared. Was a stranger in the house? He walked up to my bed and simply dissolved away. It likely was a ghost. I woke up Linda and told her to note the time in case something may have hapened to her brother , Tony. ----But he was just fine.
Linda confided in me that her father(deceased) looked a lot like Tony when he was younger, so it might have been him,just checking on things.
What I found remarkable about this event was that the "ghost" looked absolutely "real" and 'solid" And was illuminated by the dim lighting from the streetlights outside the window, exactly as if it was a real human there. There was not enough light to see his face, only enough to make out his form and clothing (light pants and a dark windbreaker jacket) "there was NO "white" ghostly form or any "glowing" involved... but rather Just like a real person---until he dissapeared, of course.

Good points. Thank you very much. With the EMF's from the apartment complexes... I wonder if emf field help or contribute to manifestations... but would the emf field help create something that doesn't exist, or just make it easier for it to manifest itself? Perhaps emf fields give these "apparitions" the little extra they need to show themselves? I did wonder about the little girl. Oddly, there were scratches on the door on the inside. Could have been a dog (what I thought) but maybe her parents locked her in there and there is somet strong emotions or energy still remaining in the room? All I know is I know what I saw was a little girl and it was pretty freaking strange to wake up to someone looking at you.

People can have a out of body and not even know it...it's very possible.
Right there you mentioned apartment complexes...this might also explain a lot. Each unit has strong pulses of electromagnetic fields, all combined together. As to living in a house, where you only have just your house with the emf, as to having several units with all those emfs, plus counting all the tv sets, microwaves, stereo equipment...etc. These are all high levels of emfs.
High levels of emf can also cause higher levels of manifestations.
It's is also possible that the little girl died in that apartment and she is still there.

There are so many possibilities...either she was able to manifest for that long period of time...or you had a out of body...or many other things.

I have heard of that but never considered that could be what happened. It appeared to me that I was awake the whole time but I suppose it is possible. Also, I have noticed this only seems to happen in places like apartment complexes (at least for me so far) and not in my own home. Makes me think it is related to where people many people may have lived. It was really strange how I woke up -- as if someone had tapped me on the shoulder. I open my eyes and there she is standing right in front of me. Could have I had an out of body experience? It's possible.

Have you ever heard of "Out of body" experience?
It's where the soul will actually leave the body and take a journey...once the soul has left the body for just a short period of time, you see things on the other side that you would not normally do while awake.

I do agree with Kat that it wasn't anything bad -- that much I do know. I mostly don't understand, if I was dreaming or hallucinating, why in the heck I would imagine a little girl in a plaid dress just wanting me to open a door?

No message of any kind. I did not sense it was anything bad, rather more of a positive like "hey I need your help.." Ironically, there was a girl I had been very close to in 2003 that died April of that year and I hadn't heard from her since then -- and this "odd encounter" with this little girl was last year in 2008. I only found out three months ago that she died in 2003 in Arizona. I moved to Florida in February of 2003 and lost touch. I don't know why but just decided to track her down and found out she had died of a seizure. This is the only person I have been close to that had died recently. While it was unsettling, it is equally hard for me to explain or understand it. These type of things just don't happen to me (or hadn't).

I had an experience where I was visited by my grandmother 7 yrs after she passed. She had woken me up from a sound sleep. She was not recognizable though. She came as a ethereal form and once she realized I was frightened she left quickly. I didn't realize it was her until the next day when I remembered it was the patting on my arm that woke me up. I feel she was there reassuring me as she had done while here.
Do you have anyone that you have lost as a friend or family member. Or like Kat says, it could have been an angel. Did you feel like you got a message from the little girl? It must have been unsettling for you.

One of two things....

either a angel...or you were sleep walking and dreamed it.

I just don't believe that ghosts can appear for that long of a period. It takies everything they got to manifest in the first place...gathering all the energy they can to just manifest for only a few seconds. But for that long of time as you stated above...it's very unlikely that it could have been a haunting...to actually interact with you like that while you walked up to open the door for her.

If I had to really say what it was...I would turn more to it being a angel than anything else.
